Labor bills, labor bills, labor bills. My last car was a Grand Am with a Quad 4 in it. For a 4 banger that motor flew. Drove the same car and motor with a auto hooked to it All I can say is the auto was way slower. It wouild shift before I could get into the power band of the Quad. Your forgetting on the supras the auto boxes are switchable, manual modes, for allowing you to change gear yourself, sports mode, allowing the engine to redline before changing gear.
They also! Autos can be quicker in certain situations, dragging for a start, and are definately the better choice overall. Loads of advantages, all of which have been mentioned a thousand times on other forums. I miss a manual, but only for the launches Totally manual! I reaally dont like sport cars with auto, it some kind of odd to see that. Im not talking about secuential boxes A decent autobox is a joy to drive, in a sports situation or otherwise and is quicker than a manual once you start going.
I adapted to it and it adapted to me.. When i very occasionally have a little honda type-r, or m3, or boxster, that feel like having a go, you can actually see when they change gear, and loose even more ground, might be lazy but it's quicker. If you ever want fun just put it second, and well it think rev limiter comes in about ish. I have driven manual TT,s much the same in second and leave it.
The other gears just give better economy. Does it count a V6 Camry? Have to say, I own a manual and it's not pretty to drive!! I was hell bent on having a manual supe but with hindsight I coulda got more car for the same money if I'd gone with the auto option.
I'd say drive both and see People say the clutch is heavy but i didnt notice any difference to my MR2 Turbo which i owned at the time.
The Auto is just that I've had both auto and manual 2. Yet the 3. An auto box will cost a small mortgage if it disintegrates, i'm sure many a 2.
Having been out in my manual supra today you get so much more control over the pace of the car and the rev range, so if you want to drive it with enthusiasm controlling the engine revs, a manual box is the only way to go. I believe the non turbo mk4's have an even bigger gap between them.
Im sure the mk3 is the same charlie will be along soon to tell us. I did a little bit of homework last night the mk3 none turbo as a of 8. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Couldn't be easier. The only thing I didn't like was the exhaust note when going through the gears and the fact that I got pretty bored of the autobox.
I would prefer a manual if I got one again, but I wouldn't say know to an auto. Says the guy with the FWD shopping car! Thats priceless Anyway, what's this thing about a rev limiter for the auto car too, in the first 3 out of 4 gears? And as for changing gear when you want too The maunal has a rev limiter too, I have had several 6's bouncing off it trying to keep up; The limt refered to above is a pretty standard feature in most auto boxes, It is there to stop you blowing it to bits.
Book times, not press times, for a stock UK car I believe were 4. I do not believe any figures were released for the JDM car, but as the JDM gives better lower down torque and is lighter with faster spooling turbos, I suspect they are slightly quicker in stock form.
It was so easy I was suprised. That is one reason I bought a JDM car. With the extra time with the engine not driving the wheels between changes and only the momentum of the car fighting road resistance and drag, six speeds will require perfect and rapid changes to stand a chance of keeping up with a computer controlled box. When RWHP is equal the auto has it every time. As was mentioned earlier, times don't really tell the full story anyway.
I'm not getting drawn into a debate, for me manual mode auto is no comparison to the real thing! Each to their own, both great cars and undoubtedly the supra auto box is a really good piece of work.
I think the manual has it every time! I'm really impressed with the j-spec set up and a manaul gearbox, it kicks arse and I'd put it up against any auto of the same spec any day of the week. Although the figure of 20 feet was purely speculative as I wanted to make a point that the difference was miniscule. Don't get me wrong this gearbox is phenomenal when you use it correctly, though even just left in Drive it can do a lot of damage!
Seriously though, spend a bit of time driving similar spec auto's and manuals before you make judgement on which is best to drive. Each are better at different things, don't go thinking your Supra is the best of all worlds - it isn't. If you prefer driving auto cars, well get an auto. You can post now and register later.
