Install printer via web page

As an alternative to selecting a print queue's installation page, a user can install a URL-identified printer by running the Add Printer Wizard explicitly. Note This installation method must be used when installing printers that contain their own network cards and are therefore not connected to a server. The installation process is not customizable beyond specifying the contents of the printer INF file , which is the same INF file used to install the printer on the print server.

I can't see any reason why you couldn't use a similar method but launch the batch files from the intranet page. We have a folder on our file server that contains shortcuts to all of our printers on our print server. When the user wants to connect to a printer they just select the shortcut from the start menu, this will install the printer onto their computer. Adding new printers to this system is easy, just create and share the printer on the print server, and from the file server create a shortcut to the new printer and put it into the folder on the server where the login script will pick it up and copy it to the workstation.

I our case we have about 60 printers on campus, it works pretty well. Our printer names are encoded so the users can find the name in the list easy. That sounds like a pretty neat solution, you could then control the security from the print server, should you not want a certain department printing to a certain floor.

James Yes security is controlled on the print server end, without access control on the print server users could always map the printer from the "add printer wizard" defeating any kind of copy controls we would build into the script. By using this method we no long receive any help desk calls about mapping printers for new users. All printers are tagged with the name of the printer so they just locate the name in the list and they are done.

It use to map the printer too. But I think that method broke when we deployed IE 8. I have running this with iPrint. Users have to click at the printer they want in a floor plan.
